How to get string length in vm template

How to get string length or string size in vm template or how get object.string.length or size in vm templates 
   
   the apache velocity template engine is tool to generate template but somebody fee that's difficult to use

      here one doubt how to get string length,

      we use same java functions here so get length like java   $string.length()
     if u get string from object means $object.string.length()
